Barenaked Ladies (BNL)
No, it’s not just the name that draws you to this band. But the name should be in indicator of things to come - that this band will do everything but play by the rules! After scouring the internet for weeks looking for tickets to a show of one of my favorite bands, (The Barenaked Ladies), I was dismayed to find out that all the good seats were already sold and that I would be relegated to the nosebleeds. Not that it mattered much, I thought, since Stephen Page could really boom out those notes and I’m sure I would be able to get a good feel for the sound. Reluctantly, I decided to buy the tickets and to ask my brother to go with me to the concert. The date of the concert came and we decided to stroll up to the show, armed with our cheapseat tickets. While walking up the gate entrance, we saw a man with a large camera walking out, and asking us if we had tickets to the show. We did, I said, but if he was offering to give us the tickets we’d be happy to take them. He passed them along, and I grabbed them not even looking to see where they were at. After giving our original tickets to the woman at the front entrance, she pointed to the escalator and showed us where our seats would be on the top floor. I decided to pull out the other two tickets that the cameraman had given us, and she said, “wow, you guys will be center stage, 2nd row”. I knew that it was just our time to catch a break, and excitedly watched the show from a much better vantage point. Gary Cogill of WFAA’s movie review was sitting right next to us, so I knew that we were no longer among the hoi polloi.
Barenaked Ladies then went out to put on one of the best shows that I have ever seen. It seemed like vocally, there was nothing that Stephen Page couldn’t do. Their ability to play both rock and roll and acoustic music allowed them to display perhaps their best asset – raw talent. With songs like “Old Apartment” and “Break your heart” you could see how versatile the band really was. The band is known for its loyal fans, many of whom started listening to Barenaked ladies over 20 years ago when they were just starting out. Many people that are familiar with Barenaked Ladies CD’s would be a bit surprised to experience the music in concert. The band gives constant humorous banter between songs and is known for their impromptu and improvised rap songs. Barenaked Ladies like to poke playful fun at their Canadian roots, and give a little something for everyone. Corporate booking agencies are starting to see more and more demand for BNL, who keep a busy schedule that includes several international dates.
