Hong Kong Rugby Sevens
So ever since I have set foot in Hong Kong, there has been one event that everyone is telling me that I can't miss and must circle on the calendar - Hong Kong Rugby Sevens. Now, as an American, its true that I would get way more excited for a University of Texas Football game or a March Madness college basketball game, but as I now live in Hong Kong and the folks here dance to a different drum beat, this looks to be about as good as its going to get in terms of a HK sports event that gets everyone fanatical, which is one thing that Brits, Aussies and Americans all have in common.
Even though I don't know how a point is scored in Rugby or even if I'll be able to sit through a whole match, I'm excited. If this is the big balleyhooed event of the year that everyone goes crazy for, well, then, "when in Rome", as they say. The cool side experiment to take a look at is to see how much things will change this weekend. What type of influence will these Anglos have on a 96% Asian population? What types of bands will come in for live events? How crazy will the revelry get to? After seeing both Carnival in Rio and Mardi Gras in New Orleans (not to mention some type of Moon Festival in Split, Croatia) I am expecting big things. And I'm sure that the Sevens will not disappoint.
